Introducing fascinating craft beer taprooms in Seoul

About ten years ago, South Korea experienced a surge in enthusiasm for craft beer. This trend was driven by a backlash against mainstream Korean beers like OB and Cass, which many people found lacking in flavor. Breweries and bottle shops sprang up like mushrooms after rain, and craft beer festivals were held.

However, the popularity of craft beer has waned somewhat since then. Some breweries have closed down, and the festivals are no longer held. Nevertheless, there are still a few prominent Korean breweries that have continued to thrive over the years. Today, I will introduce one of the most innovative craft beer taprooms and breweries in Seoul, known for its unique lineup of beers.

1. Magpie Brewery (맥파이)

In Korea, magpies are considered good luck. Magpie Brewing Company was founded in 2011 by four foreigners with the goal of introducing an excellent beer culture to Korea. Magpie is a pioneer of Korean craft beer. If you can only visit one craft brewery in Korea, I would recommend Magpie. (google maps)

2. Seoul Gypsy (서울 집시)

Seoul Gypsy is a gypsy brewery that creates experimental beers while wandering through life. It is located in the charming neighborhood of Seosulla-gil. Enjoying a beer while overlooking the city walls makes it taste twice as good. The beer lineup changes frequently, making it an intriguing and fun place to visit. (google maps)

3. The Hand and Malt Brew Lab (핸드앤몰트)

The Hand and Malt offers beers that capture the essence of local flavors. They brew using regional specialties such as Jeju tangerines, Chilgok honey, and Sinan salt. If I had to choose the most Korean beer, I would say it's Hand and Malt.

4. Amazing Brewing Company (어메이징 브루잉 컴퍼니)

A godfather of the Korean indie brewery scene, it has long thrived in Seongsu-dong. Renowned for its delicious beers and universally liked casual snacks, it captures the good vibes of Seongsu-dong. (google maps)

5. Seoul Brewery (서울 브루어리)

They have two branches in Seoul, one in Seongsu and another in Hapjeong. The stylish interior design is impressive. While they don't have distinctly Korean dishes, it means they offer snacks that anyone can enjoy without hesitation. (google maps)
